Whether simple or complex, a well-drafted will is essential to make sure you’re passing your money, property and possessions to the people you most want to benefit after your death.

If you die without a will, the law says who will receive your estate and the result may not be what you expect. A will can also protect your wealth for future generations through the use of trusts.

Before I draft your will, we’ll meet so I can ask you about your personal and family situation, assets and your wishes on your death. Our fees will depend on whether the will is simple, standard or complex and I’ll confirm the fees before we begin drafting.

Different types of wills

A simple will contains basic funeral wishes and a small number of straightforward gifts.

A standard will may include detailed funeral wishes, more complex or conditional gifts, gifts to charity or several gifts of specific assets or cash sums and provision for guardians of children. Basic advice on any inheritance tax liability would also be included.

A complex will may include a discretionary or life interest trust, a disabled person’s trust, trusts linked to tax planning, options to purchase property, gifts of business or agricultural property and more complex inheritance tax advice.

I can also advise on the likely inheritance tax implications for your estate and whether we can mitigate the impact of that tax through your will, using charitable bequests, or by ensuring eligibility for other exemptions or reliefs for example.
